Launched in 2001, the Dot NAME gTLD is the only one intended for personal web pages only. These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. Initially, just 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to order john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased 3rd-level domain names remained functional.
